Since Batteries are one of the main components for an electric scooter they also have a big impact on the cost. To make an informed decision is is an advantage to spend a little time to understand the terminology and the types of batteries.

To get the best value when you purchase an electric scooter, you should think carefully about the use of the electric scooter you want to buy. The main factors to consider is Cost, Speed, Climbing ability, range and battery life. Once you understand the terminology you can choode the correct battery for range or for battery life.

Since there are are many people who are unfamiliar with with Electric Scooter batteries, the first section will attempt to simplify the description of the battery Terminology. The second section relates to the usages of the battery technology, the different types of batteries with some advantages and disadvantages.

SIMPLE BATTERY TERMINOLOGY

A.H: (ALSO KNOWN AS AMP HOUR.)

AH, Amp hour, is to the term for the amount of energy that can flow through the battery in one hour. This gives the electric scooter the range or distance, As a General rule the greater the AH the longer range. This is the measurement of the storage capacity of the battery. 20AH stands for a storage capacity of the battery or the amount of energy that can flow through the battery in one hour.

Note: The range can also be affected by the power of the motor and the number of amp hours needed per hour to provide the performance of the electric scooter.

VOLTAGE:

Generally speaking the battery Volts give the electric scooter its power or torque.  In simple terms the higher voltage the greater ability to provide power to the electric scooters motor. For Electric Scooters based on the weight of the Scooter 60 Volts usually a minimum with options for 72 Volts for higher powered electric scooters . You may notice voltage is made up of 12 Volt segments, this is still from originally using 12 volts batteries, hence 60 volts is 5 X 12 Volt batteries or equivalent cells if it is a Lithium battery.

A. SEALED LEAD ACID BATTERY (SLA)

Lead Acid Electric Scooter Battery

The sealed lead acid batteries have been around for a very long time. Although they are generally different than the standard type of battery that you will find in any car or truck. This is because they need to generate less current over a longer time. This is different from a very high current required for starting an engine, that the auto industry has been relying on for years.

Because they are the oldest type, they were also the first to be used in electric scooters when they originally came on to the market. Today, they continue to be popular in many of the lower cost electric scooters because of their cost.

The main downside of the SLA battery has to be their heavy weight and sizebecause they are larger. However, they are less expensive compared to Lithium batteries and they are also readily available. This factor ensures they continue being used in electric Scooters. It is worth noting the life span of a sealed acid battery depends on the surrounding temperatures as well as its size and quality.

B. GEL CELL BATTERY (GEL)

The Silica Gel cell are very similar to the Lead Acid batteries and have also been used for some time now. The difference is they are fully sealed and have Silica Gel instead of Acid. Because they arre sealed they are able to be fitted on an angle, unlike the Lead acid battery which should be fitted upright.

Gel batteries are made with thicker plates than other batteries because there is no liquid to spill or refill. Generally the Silica Gel batteries have a longer life with the added advantage of being able to be placed on their side not just upright.

They continue to be popular batteries in many electric scooters because they are inert, (do not catch fire) and do not leak acid.

Their overall performance is usually better than the Lead acid battery but not as high performance as the Lithium battery.

C. LITHIUM-ION BATTERY (LI-ION)

Lithium Ion Electric scooter battery provide longer life and bigger range.

The Lithium batteries have a huge weight advantage over other types of batteries in many cases being 1/3 the weight of the alternative Lead acid or Silica gel batteries

This means better balance for the Electric scooter also longer range based on the efficient process of the lithium batteries. In most cases they have up to three times longer life.

This has led many people to pay extra money to use this option on their Electric Moped.

The standard for the Lithium battery has been become more stable over the past few years with the adoption of 18650 cells. These celss look similar to replacement AAA batteries used over many years. Previously there were a lot of different shapes and measurements.

Many manufacturers are now recomending Lithium despite the cost increase because it has enabled them to be able to increase the warranty available compared the Lead acid and Gel batteries.

Factors that also make Li-ion battery tech popular is they require less maintenance when not in use, they do not suffer from the “battery memory” and you can basically ignore them for long stretches of time without a problem.

As a result of these significant advantages Electric Scooter Li Ion Batteries they are becoming more popular. Lithium batteries have the advantage of being light enough to be used for electric scooter removable battery, this enables the battery to be charged away from the electric scooter.

The downside, their price is often much higher than that of the sealed lead acid battery and Gel battery. In fact with modern electric scooters  a large part of the price is likely to be the cost of the battery..

The main factors in choosing a battery type are Cost, Speed, Climbing ability, range and electric scooter battery life. All of these factors should have bearing on the choice of electric scooter battery pack necessary for the model you want to use.

If you need to ride longer distances and more climbing the electric scooter lithium battery pack would probably best suit your needs.

However if you do not use your electric scooter often  or do not need a Removable Battery the GEL or Lead Acid may suit your requirements.

Other considerations could be the need to have a removable battery or rapid charging, if these are critical then Lithium is the best option.

In many cases you can perform a battery upgrade at a later date if you have battery problems. However you may also need a different charger as different batteries use different charging cycles.
